Color Counts

By Helene Forester & Chelsea Musselman

Changing the colors of your space is one of the easiest ways to transform your space. Back in September, Country Living magazine had an issue dedicated to “Amazing Makeovers” and “How to change any room – fast!” They took one room setting and changed out a few key elements in different colors to create four pictures that look as if they could be in four completely different homes. In every setting the magazine changed the color of the chairs, the wall color, throw pillows, and the accessories on the table.

Country Living

The first is the Coastal look with turquoise and green as the accent colors.  This setting has a very rustic and beachy vibe with the light turquoise and green accents. Also, by leaving the walls white, it allows for the room to be light, bright and open.

Dark&Dramatic

The second is a much more romantic setting. By using various shades of grey and pink, this room automatically feels warm and more intimate. The dark grey on the walls is another way to make the space feel cozy.

Sunny&Bright The next room is bright and sunny. Yellow is known to make people feel warm and happy. Well this room is a perfect example of that. Keeping everything else in the room white and grey lets that sunshine yellow take the forefront. It is a great way to get the warm sunny feel on even the dreariest of days.

Fresh&Fun Last is an example of a complementary color scheme. Complementary colors mean that the colors are opposite of each other on the color wheel. This room setting uses Blue and Coral, a pinkish shade of orange. The reason for using this kind of color scheme is that when these colors are placed next to each other they create a wonderful contrast against each other in a space.

As you can see with these images, color is one of the quickest and easiest ways you can change the look and mood of a room. Just changing the paint on the walls can have a strong impact.  Think about what a room would look about if you painted white walls dark grey…big change. What once was bright and airy is now dark and intimate. Another way you can change the look of your home fast is by keeping your large, main pieces of furniture neutral, so that you can easily change your colors with pillows, accessories, and accent furniture.
